RINZAI ZEN Centre

Tenkū-ji (Empty Sky Temple) is a rural Rinzai Zen practice centre located in the Central Range of the Andes, just outside of Pereira, Colombia. The centre provides a regular schedule of zazen (seated meditation) at both the mountain zendo and a location in Pereira and also hosts retreat practice. The resident monk is Seiun Thomas Henderson. The centre provides Zen practice in the lineage, style and spirit of the teaching of Kyōzan Jōshū Sasaki, Rōshi, as passed down to Seiun by his teacher, Myōkyō.

RESIDENT MONK

Seiun started Zen practice with Zengetsu Myōkyō, Oshō, at the Centre Zen de la Main (now Enpuku-ji) in 1996. Following a period of living in Japan, where he maintained a regular lay Zen practice at Daitoku-ji in Kyoto, Seiun returned to Montreal and to practice at Enpuku-ji. He was ordained by Myōkyō in January of 2011 and continued to practice and train at Enpuku-ji until relocating with his husband to Colombia in 2022. Seiun’s practice and training with Myōkyō is ongoing.

ZEN BUDDHISM

“The true purpose of Zen is to see things as they are, to observe things as they are, and to let everything go as it goes. The practice of Zen is to open our small mind.”

-Shunryu Suzuki

Zazen is sometimes described as “sitting like a mountain.” In zazen, we sit in silence and stillness, as our breath settles and becomes complete. We observe the arising and dissolving of thoughts. Zen is the practice of being in full relationship with the world, in every moment.
